Angered over a U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee approval of a full Congressional vote for a resolution that would condemn the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by the Young Turk regime in 1915 as genocide, Turkey recalled its U.S. ambassador to Ankara yesterday.

"It should not be understood that we have pulled him back permanently," a senior Turkish diplomat told the Reuters news agency.

The move came after a historic vote of 27 versus 21 where the Foreign Affairs Committee approved a Congressionnal vote for H. Resolution 106  on Wednesday, calling on the White House to recall the World War I-era mass killings as genocide.

In recent weeks, denial of the Armenian Genocide was punished both at the United States’ Los Angeles Times and Switzerland.

In Los Angeles, L.A. Times managing editor Douglas Frantz was ousted from his position after a controversial decision to suspend Armenian reporter Mark Arax’s story about a pending resolution in the U.S. Congress to recognize the genocide. Frantz had said that he thought Arax’s ethnic origin and emotional attachment to the subject matter had made his reporting “biased.” Backed by California’s Armenian community, Arax had raised a ruckus, pointing out that Africans were not forbidden from writing about Africa, or Jews were not denied writing about the Holocaust. Furthermore, Frantz’ ties to a Turkish genocide denial convention were revealed.

From the National Post

The prominent journalist and voice of Turkey's dwindling Armenian minority, Hrant Dink, was shot dead on Jan. 19 as he left his office in Istanbul. Dink was editor of Agos, the sole Armenian newspaper in Turkey. He had been prosecuted because of his call for recognition of Ottoman Turkey's 1915 massacre of 1.5 million of its ethnic Armenian citizens -- a crime against humanity that the Canadian House of Commons formally acknowledged in April, 2004. His murder starkly demonstrates how Turkish denial of this abomination, the first genocide of the 20th century, amounts to continuing violence against multi-ethnic democracy and pluralism. It is a painful reminder that without redemption for past injustices, the ghosts of history will cast a long shadow on Turkey's future.
